ZIMBABWE – A suspected poacher is on the run in Zimbabwe after he shot dead two police officers and a civilian in the south-east of the country.

Authorities stepped up their campaign against poachers in the wake of the poisoning of more than 60 elephants in the Hwange National Park recently.

The Chronicle is reporting that two sergeants were led by an informant to the home of a suspected poacher, near Chipinge in south-eastern Zimbabwe.

They had a tip-off that the man, who’s not been named, had a firearm.

They entered the homestead on Tuesday and the man opened fire with an AK-47, killing both officers and the informant.

It’s not clear what animal he’s accused of poaching, but Chipinge has one of the country’s Intensive Protection Zones for black rhino.

Some Zimbabweans writing online said they felt the police should have had more backup before approaching someone they knew was armed.
