ZIMBABWE – A ZRP officer was assaulted and injured by gamblers after he tried to arrest them while on patrol in Marange.

The two gamblers, Hosea Marange, 41, and Tirivaviri Marange, 24, were slapped with an eight months jail term each by magistrate Sekai Chiwundura.

Three months were suspended on condition that they don’t commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Five months were suspended on condition that they perform 175 hours of community service at Marange Training Centre and Sedza primary school.

On September 30 around 22 00 hrs ,the court heard, Munyaradzi  Nyazimbi, 24, was on patrol at Marange Business Centre when an unknown  man reported to him that he had been robbed of his cash.

Nyazimbi and the unknown man went to identify the alleged robber. The cop then saw a group of people who were gambling near Mega market shop.

The gamblers fled but Nyazimbi managed to arrest Hosea and handcuffed him. Tirivaviri then charged towards Nyazimbi demanding that he release his brother.

When the cop refused Tirivaviri hit him with a stone and the officer fell down. The two bothers then assaulted the officer all over the body and tore his shirt before taking his cap away. Hosea reportedly kicked the officer as he was still handcuffed.

Nyazimbi was rescued by one Douglas Mutambara who had heard the noise from inside the Mega market shop. The two brothers fled but were later arrested.

The cop sustained some injuries.
