ZIMBABWE – Two men were arrested at Ruwa tollgate after being found in possession of more than 38 carats of diamond whilst on their way from Mutare to Harare where they reportedly wanted to trade them.
Never Chikwenha, and Abbas Macky, all from Mutare, appeared at the Harare magistrates’ court facing charges of illegally possessing precious stones.
Chikwenha and Macky, who were represented by lawyers Dumisani Mtombeni and Tafadzwa Hungwe respectively, were not asked to plead to the charges when they appeared before magistrate Elijah Makomo.
Allegations facing the duo are that on January 11at around midday detectives from Vehicle theft Squad received information to the effect that the duo was in possession of pieces of diamond.
The detectives were also told that the two were travelling to Harare from Mutare.
Acting on the tip-off the detectives went to Ruwa tollgate where they intercepted the two who were travelling in a Toyota Mark II-ADW 2227.
Chikwenha was on the driving wheel, according to the State.
It is said that the detectives identified themselves and before searching their car.
Fourteen pieces of diamonds were then found stashed in the sun visa on the driver’s side.
Chikwenha and Macky failed to produce licenses authorizing them to trade in the precious stones.
The 14 pieces were reportedly sent to Mines and Minerals Corporation of Zimbabwe for weighing and it was discovered that 112 were genuine diamond stones weighing 38.36 carats.
