ZIMBABWE – Mafnas Chakoroma hauled her husband Maxwell Chabaya to the Harare civil court claiming maintenance for the upkeep of their two children.
She alleged that her husband was not being responsible for the welfare of their children and suspected that he spent his money with girlfriends.
“I need US$400 for the upkeep of our two children.
“Maxwell is a company director who realises an income of about US$1 500 per month but he fails to meet his responsibilities as the father.
“We stay together but he has another wife and another child.
“The major problem is that he has many girlfriends and spends his money with them.
“I discovered this in his cell phone. Some of the girlfriends used to be tenants with us at a house we rented,” said Mafnas.
In response, Maxwell said:
“I am surprised why she took me to the maintenance court yet we stay together.
“If I am to give her maintenance, I offer her US$80.
“I do not have girlfriends that she is accusing me of.
“We actually wanted to discuss where she gets that from but it did not come out well.
“She just expects too much from me yet I earn US$200 per month because the company i work for is a small one.”
Magistrate Trevor Nyatsanza, who presided over the matter, ordered Maxwell to pay US$100 per month effective January 31.
