ZIMBABWE – This came to light when Loveness Shamba dragged her ex-hubby Peter John to the Harare civil court claiming maintenance for the upkeep of their two children.
“I want US$500 for the upkeep of our children.
“I am seeking assistance from the maintenance court because Peter is an irresponsible father.
“Peter does not care about the children’s welfare since the day I eloped.
“He is neither aware of the sizes of the clothes children wear nor concerned about his children’s health.
“Peter is a mechanic who earns US$150 per day but does not spare a single cent for his children,” said Loveness.
In response, Peter John said:
“My business is now down, so I am now working under someone else as a mechanic realising US$25 a week.
“So I can only offer her US$50 for maintenance.
“I cannot just give her money for luxurious reasons because she stays with her parents and my children are now staying in the rural areas.”
Magistrate MarehwanazvoGofa, who presided over the matter, ordered Peter to pay US$85 maintenance with effect from January.
