ZIMBABWE – A tuck-shop owner yesterday offered his baby mama US$10 for the upkeep of their three-year-old child instead of the US$200 she wanted.

Lovemore Seberai told the court that Colleta Mabanzo needed the money for her own use and not for the child.

“I understand that Colleta wants to go back to school and she needs the money to pay for her school fees.

“Her parents don’t even know that she made this maintenance application because if they did, they would have discussed the issue with me.

“If she truly needs the money for the upkeep of our child she should accept US$10 I am offering because the child is too young to need that huge amount of money.

“I have other children who are failing to go to school right now because I don’t have money,” he said.

In her application, Colleta was asking for US$200 from Lovemore so that she can take care of their minor child.

“Lovemore should pay the money I am asking for because our child is growing everyday and her needs are becoming more demanding to handle alone.

“I earn a living through selling sweets and the money I get is not sufficient for the two of us,” she said.

Magistrate Ruth Kamangira deferred the matter to February 4.
