ZIMBABWE – A highfield man, who assaulted his wife for having premature birth, will spend 18 months in prison.
Benjamin Chida hit his wife Florence Mashuva with an electric cord until she went on premature labour, he even followed her in hospital where he assaulted her for giving birth to a premature baby.
Chida denied allegations when he appeared before Mbare magistrate Stanford Mambanje facing physical abuse charges.
However, the prosecutor Revai Mudozori proved that he was guilty before Mbare magistrate Stanford Mambanje slapped him with 30 months imprisonment.
Of the initial sentence 12 months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar crime.
He will effectively serve the remaining 18 months.
Mudozori proved that, on December 23 Benjamin struck Florence using an electric cord on her back accusing her of lying about her health.
After that Florence went on premature labour and she was taken to Harare hospital where she was operated on.
She then gave birth to a premature baby.
On January 16, whilst in hospital Benjamin assaulted Florence accusing her of failing to carry the baby for the full nine months.
She sustained injuries and she sought medical attention.
The medical affidavit was admitted as evidence in court.
