ZIMBABWE-HARARE-Relatives of Zimbabwe’s late Vice President Joshua Nkomo are threatening to tear down a statue of him that the authorities are erecting in Harare.
The row is over the positioning of the statue. His family said on Wednesday the place the authorities have chosen is an insult to the former opposition leader.
The spot is at the Karigamombe Centre in central Harare.
In Shona, Karigamombe means “one who brings down the bull by the horns”.
The symbol of Nkomo’s PF-Zapu was a bull.
The party was forced to merge with Zanu-PF in the late 1980s, so if anyone actually brought down the bull it was Robert Mugabe’s party.
Nkomo’s family see this positioning as an insult though they cannot prove it is deliberate.
Zimbabwe’s unity deal was reached in 1987 and today’s power-sharing government is also not free from frequent squabbles.

Personally I am against those who want to put up the statue and those who intend to pull it down. People just want to score cheap political points via a dead man's virtues. Let his spirit RIP. Whatever you do we will never get him back so pliz stop squabling over that an move on with other issues which cause less friction.
Tired of this Matebelelnad and Mashonaland issue! We are one please! Zvokudzokera kurangaridzana zvaana bhuru najongwe zvabvepi futi! Hey guys lets move on as one family! Zimbabwe is for us all and let us all honour our heros whole heartedly and shun tribalism for cheap politics we will end up tarnishing the good work they have done for us as a nation not a family!
lets unite people why r we wasting time argiung wiv silly things. Nkomo was a national hero so why wont we let his spirit rest in peace, & work on how to get zimbabwe goin?
VIVA ZIMBABWEANS.
A people without a history is a people without a future. Although this erection of Nkomo's statue, and all the squablings goin on seem trivial, we must not overlook the significance of the message.
ofcaz umdala wethu was a tru hero and erection of his statue will be a great hounor. but y harare instead of his home town byo? many byo pple appreciates him than the hahrarians. after all thats were his family is. they dont have his grave atleast give them the statue for a change. __ __i agree with the family. thats y his brother wants to dig him from the heros acre and rebarry him ekhaya.
its sad umdala wethu is layed alongside thugs in the so called heroes acre,.. shit!
Surely there must be another good place to put this statue , if they realy dont want hussles with the family , then they must find another place , but if they continue to insist , then it shows clearely that they want a fight with Nkomo`s family.
This shows us there is no democracy because in a democracy the Nkomo family should play a big role in such things.
This statue shows that pple appreciate the great work this man did alongside other illustrious sons and daughters of zimbabwe. Think pple shld not use our fallen heros to furhter their own political ambitions this wld demean their contribution. To my understanding his political party was represented countrywide not in byo only, which automatically means it was national not a regional party. Nation comes first and your tribe come fifth! Thank you!
