ZIMBABWE — HARARE – Zimbabwe’s ruling MDC says it has unearthed a plot by the Attorney General's office and the spy Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) to secure convictions against MDC MPs in a desperate bid to shrink the MDC’s simple majority in Parliament.
In the meantime, a senior Zanu (PF) official has threatened to “hit back” at the MDC over its alleged rowdy behaviour in Parliament when backbenchers heckled and jeered President Mugabe as he presented his official address during the opening of Parliament.
Angry generals struggled to restrain themselves in the House as MDC legislators sang songs denigrating Mugabe and his junta.
Meanwhile the MDC has alleged the deputy Attorney General, Johannes Tomana is leading the plot in which the Zanu (PF) regime is planning to secure convictions and lay more trumped-up charges against MDC MPs.
“The whole thing is contrived to reverse our majority in Parliament,” MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa told ZimDaily.
Tomana was not immediately available for comment.
Zanu (PF) has been shaken to the core about the resistance it now faces in Parliament and; an opposition controlling Parliament is recipe for disaster.
Last week five MDC MPs were arrested in Harare during the opening of the 7th Parliament of Zimbabwe.
Four of them, Pearson Mungofa, the MP for Highfield East, Eliah Jembere, Epworth; Bednock Nyaude, Bindura South and Trevor Saruwaka, Mutasa Central are still in police custody.
They were denied bail. Hon Nyaude was granted bail by a Bindura magistrate but the State has appealed.
Zanu (PF)’s administration secretary and also head of Zimbabwe’s feared CIO has made chilling remarks about the manner in which the MDC MPs embarrassed Mugabe in Parliament.
“It was a painful experience to watch our president, your president, being subjected to that kind of treatment and harassment by the MDC and its supporters,” Mutasa said.
“We know that you were as pained as your leadership and there should be some recourse for that kind behaviour. We will do all we can to feed you and be strong to hit back.
“They know what we are capable of doing and they should not cry foul when we deliver that blow as symbolized by the fist which is the party's symbol.”
He said Zanu (PF) would meet soon, possibly on Wednesday when the Politburo meets, to coordinate a response to the MDC’s actions in Parliament on Tuesday.
“I cannot speak more about the things that will be done,” Mutasa said. “If the president was here, he would have told us what will be done and how it should be.”
