ZIMBABWE - HARARE – PRIME Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has been calling Gideon Gono all sorts of names behind closed doors accusing the RBZ man of waging a “childish” campaign to stay in power.
Gideon Gono
Gono, well known for his control of the independent and state media through bribes, recently leaked a letter that readers were made to believe was a personal communication to Prime Minister Tsvangirai when in reality it became an open letter.
The Prime Minister never received the letter. He read it from newspapers just like everyone.
It is has now turned out to be an open letter and not a direct and confidential plea for assistance.
The Prime Minister is very angry and has been telling those close to him that Gono is childish,” a source within the Prime Minister’s office told ZimDaily.
Tsvangirai has always distanced himself from the Gono and Biti fight but has never attacked the “economic terrorist” in public.
Sources in the political corridors say Tsvangirai has been easy on Gono because they are “home boys” from Buhera.
At the end of last week “sources” widely believed to be linked to Gideon Gono claimed that the fight between the two men was about a woman called Monica Kanyepi who is said to have a child with Biti.
Gideon Gono is one of the outstanding issues from the September 15 signed Global Political Agreement. His quasi-fiscal activities have made him unpopular with the new government.
However, Zanu (PF) want him to stay on at the Reserve Bank because he is strategic in their access to state funds and resources.
Meanwhile, The Zanu (PF) league of political hangers yesterday witnessed Mugabe vowing
that he will not allow his personal banker Gideon Gono being fired at the behest of the MDC.
The 85 years old leader at the funeral of Gideon Gono’s brother Peter said, “Today those in Britain are not happy with him, even some in the inclusive Government. They want him to go and I said he will not go, but they will not listen,” said President Mugabe, who was accompanied by his young wife Grace Mugabe.
Gono and Mugabe’s relationship goes way back to the mid 90s when Gono was still with the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe at the same time being Robert Mugabe’s personal banker.
Gono became unpopular when his tenure as the Reserve Bank Governor transformed him to become the Zanu (PF) funder for all its projects ranging from paying top army generals, buying vehicles for Zanu (PF), running dubious quasi fiscal policies that made him override the Minister of Finance and top of the list he was funding Zanu (PF)’s terror campaign during the presidential run off election period.
At the funeral Mugabe acknowledged this as the reason why Gono is not wanted at the central clearinghouse.
“That is the crime he is alleged to have committed, that he stood behind the Government of this man called Robert Mugabe, who must collapse under regime change,” said Mugabe.
“Standing behind the government” at the time meant that Zanu (PF) had to hold power by any means necessarily and the task lay in Gono funding the hate campaign.

Mugabe consoles his personal banker and RBZ Governor Gideon Gono at the burial of Peter Gono in Buhera yesterday
Zanu PF, for more than 8 years have been blaming their bad governance on Western sanctions and it is against this tired political rhetoric that Mugabe used to defend Gono’s quasi fiscal policies.
“But knives are out for this man. They are sharpened knives aimed at beheading this man. Hapana asingazive kuti nenyaya yemasanctions musimboti yedu yakavaRBZ, ndiko kwakabva rubatsiro rwenyika (everyone knows that sanctions hit us bad. All assistance came from the RBZ),” said Mugabe as he got cheers from an obviously Zanu PF beneficiary crowd at the Gonos’ homestead in Buhera.

Among those showing face-a vital thing in Zanu PF circles so that “you stand up and be counted” were Harare Governor and Resident Minister David Karimanzira; Health and Child Welfare Deputy Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora, Minister of Media and Information and Publicity Webster Shamu who took the opportunity to praise his boss diverting attention at the funeral.
There was also behind the scenes Zanu PF member and longtime Gideon Gono’s friend the Tsholotsho South Member of the House of Assembly Professor Jonathan Moyo. The presence of Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri; Central Intelligence Organisation director-general Retired Brigadier-General Happyton Bonyongwe; the defunct Media and Information Commission chair Dr Tafataona Mahoso and senior RBZ officials was noted as they try to
maintain a grip to power.
Peter Gono’s death means that Dr Gideon Gono is now the only surviving male member of his family having lost his younger brother last year.

JOKE OF THE DAY - Grace Mugabe holding a baby walks into a drug store and asks the clerk if she can use the store's baby scale. "Sorry, ma'am," says the clerk. "Our baby scale is broken.
But we can figure the baby's weight if we weigh mother and baby together on the adult scale, and then weigh the mother alone, and subtract the second number from the first."
"Oh, that won't work," says Grace.
"Why not?" asks the clerk.
"Because," she answers, "I'm not the mother - I'm the aunt.""
