ZIMBABWE - HARARE - The all-inclusive government in Zimbabwe is in motion and already, we can all notice that Prime Minister Tsvangirai and his team are hard at work and all indications are that the team means serious business.

This is no longer the time for us to adopt armchair and academic postures regarding the functions, duties and responsibilities of the new dispensation in Zimbabwe.

Our country has to be urgently extricated from the depths of despair to which it had sunk.

It is inevitable that the majority of Zimbabweans have a lot of expectations to be met by the new all-inclusive government.

Naturally, people are already clamouring for the immediate opening of all public schools, the restoration of piped water facilities to all urban and peri urban centres as well as the equipping of all health facilities with adequate drugs and the requisite manpower; amongst other major expectations.

Indeed; it is not uncommon for the people to have these kinds of expectations from the new government.

Zimbabweans have gone through a most trying time during the past decade or so.

Here we are; bruised and battered; after having experienced all sorts of man-made maladies ranging from acute poverty and hunger to unprecedented and horrific episodes of gross human rights abuses and general social deprivation.

People will thus expect the new government to immediately go into overdrive and to ensure that Zimbabwe becomes functional again.

But this is not going to be an easy task by any standards.

Zimbabwe’s severely battered economy currently needs urgent reconstructive surgery.

Our manufacturing and agricultural sectors are operating at around 10% capacity. All other facets of our economy are in similar dire straits.

Surely, the all-inclusive government can only do so much in the next few months. This country was dead broke prior to the formation of the all-inclusive government and I am reliably informed that there is still no money to talk about in government coffers.

There is already a crisis of expectations where the people are clamouring for the immediate cessation of their suffering. They expect food to be put on their tables right away.

They want jobs and they want a national currency that has got value and that also restores their national pride.

Some shrill voices are already complaining that the all-inclusive government, with 71 ministers, is bloated and top-heavy.

Whilst some of these observations are not without merit, there is need for Zimbabweans to appreciate that this is a transitional government; thus, by definition, it is going to be short-lived. This is a unique form of government.

This is not what the people voted for on March 29, 2008. It is a compromise arrangement and this is the main reason why you have some hopeless and serial losers still being part of this government.

Put simply, the all-inclusive government is not what the doctor ordered. But then this government has to be given a chance since it is arguably the only viable and non-violent means that we have right now in order to give our country a real chance of avoiding a complete collapse of the State as has happened in Somalia.

Rebuilding Zimbabwe is not going to be anything but an easy task. But some of us in the MDC, Zimbabwe's largest and most popular political party know that if given a decent chance, Prime Minister Tsvangirai and his team will deliver the goods.

The past view days have already proved the action-packed nature of the Prime Minister's manner of doing business.

He has already been able to mobilise funds and other resources in just a few days in office. Surely, this is not a mean achievement.

Some of us are convinced that six months from today, the reconstruction efforts of the Prime Minister and his team will be there for all to see and appreciate. We need some degree of patience.

We all know that it is always easy to destroy but very difficult to rebuild. After all,Rome was not built in one day!

JOKE OF THE DAY - A drunk phoned police to report that thieves had been in his car.“They’ve stolen the dashboard, the steering wheel, the brake pedal, even the accelerator!” he cried out.

However, before the police investigation could start, the phone rang a second time with the same voice came over the line.

“Never mind,” he said with a hiccup, “I got in the back seat by mistake.”
