ZIMBABWE — HARARE  — CHAMPIONS Monomotapa proved their mettle giving Zimbabwean football fans a boost to celebrate when they sent South Africa's Ajax Cape Town crashing out of the African Champions League at Rufaro on Sunday.

 

Recovering from a 0-4 mauling by Hwange in the Premiership last week the champions put on a fine show that saw them qualify for the next round on the away goals after they finished tied on four goals with the Urban Warriors.

 

 

The champions won 2-1 and will be getting into the money spinning phase of the competition.

 

Monoz opened the scoring after just 13 minutes when captain Mthulisi Maphosa nodded home a cross from Christopher Semakweri sending the Zimbabwean fans into frenzy.
 
The fans were mixed mainly dominated by Dynamos and CAPS United fans.
 
The match was not without controversy as the goal sparked outcry from the visitors who claimed that the ball had not crossed the goal line.
 
The ball bounced on the line hitting the roof of the net and came back into play prompting the visitors to say it was not a goal.

 

The Monoz romance was however short lived as Ajax kept on piling pressure on the Monoz defence putting worries in fans' faces.
 
It was hence not surprising that 14 minutes after the Harare side had taken the lead, the visitors equalised when Granwald Scott slotted in a beautiful chance.
 
The Monoz defence had just become exposed that it could have conceded three or more goal but they played with lady luck on their side.
 
It was Mabhuti Khenyeza, the Bafana Bafana striker, who gave hosts a lot of problems instilling nerovous conditions on the hosts.

Monoz' dream was readily realised when the struck in the 38th minute through a Charles Chiutsa effort that was classical.
