ZIMBABWE — HARARE - A crack unit of intelligence officers will soon be assigned to Zimbabwe’s new Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, to beef up his security and intelligence systems following the historic signing of the power-sharing deal on Monday.

Intelligence sources told ZimDaily that over 20 CIO operatives are being allocated to the new Prime Minister, with some of them assigned to Tsvangirai’s State House.

Tsvangirai is expected to move into the new official residence as part of perks of the Prime Ministerial job he clinched Monday after intense negotiations with President Mugabe.

Tsvangirai’s official residence will be directly opposite President Mugabe’s home.
This will effectively make him Mugabe’s neighbour – a situation described as far fetched by Mugabe’s wife, Grace.

“As far as I know, a team has been handpicked that will be involved in monitoring and improving the security of the Prime Minister through an elaborate intelligence network,” a source said.

He added:  “There are strong fears that something terrible could befall the Prime Minister. Not many people are happy with this new arrangement. There is need to ensure his maximum security,” the source added.

ZimDaily heard that staff for the Prime Minister’s official residence were also being worked out.
Tsvangirai will work from the Munhumutapa Building – which also houses Mugabe’s office.
The new Prime Minister will be required to move from his Strathaven home into the Government-owned house consisting of twelve acres.

Tsvangirai's spokesman, George Sibotshiwe was unavailable for comment.

But ZimDaily heard that the administrator of general services was required to ensure that the official residence of the Prime Minister was adequately staffed and provided with such appropriate equipment, furnishings, dining facilities, services, and other provisions as may be required.

Before 1987, Canaan Sodindo Banana and his family lived in the home that Tsvangirai is now expected to move into. ZimDaily heard that the house is currently being refurbished as a home for the Prime Minister.

ZimDaily heard the home will also be used for entertaining. Tsvangirai is expected to welcome many guests to the State House on official business, and would be required to host a wide array of people from world leaders to young children.
