ZIMBABWE - HARARE – Recent media headlines have reported that Jonathan Moyo has been re-admitted into ZANU PF, despite having said that he ‘would never’ join ZANU PF again.

 

 

Jonathan Moyo who is the only ‘Independent MP’ in Zimbabwe seems to conveniently forget that he is in the public space and that such individualistic political decisions like rejoining ZANU PF reflect more on him as a leader who believes he is in a monologue rather than a dialogue with his constituency.

 

Whatever the justifications of his now usual about-turns certainly do not in any way reflect an attitude of a leader who is driven by any principles and political ethics.

 

TPerhaps the public may want to be reminded that some time in 2007, Jonathan Moyo approached various western donors seeking sponsorship for entittled, ‘The Gukurahundi Victims Memorial Bill’.

 

 

 

As part of this project, he lined up a chain of activities that included travelling around colleges and universities publicizing this Bill and even requested some civil society organisations to help him in campaigning for the project which was meant to further his individualistic and selfish interests.

 

This was the very same Jonathan Moyo who had written strongly lambasting Geoff Nyarota for making ‘political capital out of national tragedy’ by writing about the same issue.

 

 

 

In his selfish mind he thought he would use the suffering of people of Matabeleland and the Midlands regions in the 1980s to get back at his former colleagues in ZANU-PF. What a shame Moyo!

His current diatribe against the MDC must be understood within the context of Moyo’s fear of electorate defeat in any future parliamentary elections just as the Gukurahundi Bill was part of Moyo’s harking back on emotive issue with which to bolster his villagist campaign in Tsholotsho.

 

Again this is a clear illustration of a desperate political chameleon whose selfish interest in political life can take him to such levels as to be an ethnic entrepreneur.

 

The public must also know that Professor Moyo once said that when he was in ‘government it was routine for these CIO agents and their factional counterparts in government and ZANU PF politicians to abuse me as a scapegoat for anything they were unable to explain or defend.’ Now that the professor is going back to ZANU PF and government, what has happened to these concerns? Has ZANU PF suddenly become a political sanctuary? Where is the credibility of your words Professor? It has to be recalled that the Professor described ZANU PF as a dead duck on the shelf breathing only from evils of the state security and the abuse of public funds.

 

Why on earth should a person want to be part of such a political formation?

 

ZANU PF and Jonathan Moyo now need each other because they both share a future threatened by the existence of the Movement for Democratic Change.

 

Jonathan Moyo is to be rehired or reappointed as propaganda spin-doctor so that he churns out his usual vitriol on behalf of a dying political party whose rightful place is the dustbin of history.

 

Since the dawn of the inclusive government ZANU PF has failed to match the MDC’s strategies in creating platforms which Jonathan Moyo destroyed through the draconian laws like the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act as well as the Broadcasting Services Act which were used to shut down four newspapers including The Daily News and maintain the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation's monopoly intact.

 

He is seen by ZANU PF as the answer to the Prime Minister’s newsletter and the website as forums which are essentially for increasing government’s accountability and transparency.

 

Is Moyo an evil genius who does care about the fate of the nation as long as it suits his individual convenience? What type of politician is this? Even ZANU PF must not be too desperate to hire this type of monster. Politics is not all about dealing with MDC.

 

It is about delivery of services and that is what the people of Zimbabwe want.

 

When will Moyo and ZANU-PF learn this simple issue? Hear what one senior ZANU PF politburo member says about Moyo: “We want him. He knows how to deal with these MDC T greenhorns.

 

Check how he is taking Tendai Biti to pieces in his several writings in the state media. This is what we need when faced by an enemy sponsored by the imperialists.” Why should a professor reduce himself to an errand boy of ZANU-PF? The professor knows pretty well that he can no longer convince the people of Tsholotsho to vote for him and so his new paymasters (ZANU PF) will accord him the opportunity to violently arm-twist them into accepting him in the next election that certainly looks to be violent and desperate for both ZANU PF and the professor

 

The professor has forgotten his words of advice to Zimbabweans that :‘On offer is the self-indulgent leadership of President Mugabe who is now too old despite his photogenic makeup, has become very tired, visionless and beleaguered.

 

Mugabe remains in office not because he is in charge of the goings-on in the wider society but largely if not only because of considerations of his personal and family security in a world that is increasingly becoming hostile to former heads of state with unresolved human rights and corruption issues during their rule.’

 

Zimbabweans are beginning to get nauseated by the kind of intellectual dishonesty exhibited by the professor. The question that remains in our minds and one which Jonathan must try and answer is, Are you a mercenary?

 

Jonathan Moyo is a political scientist and is therefore expected to know that a political system should not express differences in name-calling but in the differences of opinions to public policy.

His decision to rejoin ZANU PF must be viewed as nothing more than a decision to misdirect public opinion by defending the very institutions, systems and attitudes that have violently militated against national progress.

Whatever his sound arguments for going back to ZANU PF, the real intent is to cause political malice, unguided cynicism and baffling intellectual dishonesty in the public and political domain in service of his selfish interests and the ancient regime.
