ZIMBABWE — HARARE – Zanu (PF) has officially appealed to new Speaker of Parliament, Lovemore Moyo, to establish a select committee to probe and punish MDC MPs who heckled and jeered President Mugabe in Parliament last week.
The appeal was officially handed to Moyo on Monday in Harare, together with an appeal from Zanu (PF) for the MDC leadership to apologise to “His Excellency.”
Describing the protest as “disgraceful and deplorable”, Zanu (PF)’s external relations secretary Kumbirai Kangai said the action of the MDC MPs in front of diplomats and invited guests cannot go unpunished.
He said the select committee should probe the causes of that action and also identify culprits and bring them to book.
“The only time we had a similar incident is when Roy Bennet assaulted Minister Chinamasa,” Kangai said, referring to Chimanimani legislator Bennet who was jailed for shoving Chinamasa during a heated parliamentary discussion.
ZimDaily heard that the junta wanted all the MDC MPs who led the revolt in Parliament to be jailed.
Parliamentary footage had already been classified and service chiefs and intelligence bosses were said to be studying it as evidence-in-chief against the MPs.
The identified MPs are set to be charged under the Parliamentary Immunity and Privileges laws.
Kangai said the Speaker must be impartial and said he must discharge his duties to the satisfaction of all parties in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the MDC has announced that its 9th anniversary is scheduled for Mkoba Stadium in Gweru on Sunday.
The party, formed on September 11 1999, expects the anniversary to be attended by tens of thousands of people.
The anniversary comes at a time the MDC has scored several political victories.
The MDC made history when last week its national chairman, Moyo was elected as Speaker of the 7th Parliament of Zimbabwe.
Apart from Tsvangirai's victory in the March 29 presidential poll, the MDC also has a majority in Parliament.
The MDC controls 45 local authorities while Zanu (PF) and the other political formation control the other 44 councils.
