HARARE – A young Zimbabwean teenager threw his whole life away by stealing a car. The next 35 years will be the most difficult for 18-year-old Amos Chivende who will languish in prison.
He stole 5 kombi’s and he also stole some goods from private cars. The magistrate who sat on his case was not so lenient as he was sentenced for five counts of theft of motor vehicles and two counts of theft from motor vehicle cases.
Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson, Detective Inspector Portia Chinho said from 8 to 13 November, Amos had targeted cars and commuter omnibuses parked outside homes around Mkoba suburb in Gweru.
“He would use duplicate keys to open car doors, start the engines and steal the vehicles,” said Det Insp Chinho.
On seeking leniency, Chivende said he regretted stealing the cars. He said he wished he could turn back the hands of time.
“There is nothing for me in prison. It’s better to just die than spending more than 30 years in prison,” he said.
He is set to be released when he is 53 years old.
