ZIMBABWE – National University of Science and Technology student Melisa Shumba (26) was at the weekend crowned Miss Universities 2012.
The vivacious model was crowned at a colourful ceremony held at Ochi City. Prominent personalities in Zimbabwe’s business fraternity and entertainment circles graced the occasion.The Bulawayo based model shrugged off competition from 23 other contestants to land the prestigious crown.
Shumba was ecstatic about her achievements and owed it to God. “I am overwhelmed by landing this prestigious title. I put my best effort and I believe God has also helped me to land the title,” said Shumba.
Her striking looks helped her lure the hearts of many in the audience. For being crowned the Queen, Shumba was given a Nissan March courtesy of Byol International, Executive Diploma in business leadership and FBC bank scholarship worth US$1 200.
She also became the Greencard Medical Aid Society’s Ambassador of Cancer Awareness for a year, among other benefits.
It was double delight for Midlands State University model Chengetai Gunguwo as she was crowned first Princess and Miss Personality, while University of Zimbabwe student Montolo Mohale was voted second princess.
First princess Gunguwo walked away with FBC bank scholarship worth US$800, a 32 inch LCD television set, a laptop and executive diploma in general management among others.
Mohale was given a washing machine, FBC scholarship worth US$500 and a laptop for being second princess. The beauty pageant lived up to its billing with prominent dendera musician Sulumani “Sulu” Chimbetu, Saiwe Chimbetu, Shastro, Mudiwa, Baba Shupi and Born Free Crew entertaining guests. Last year’s winner, Ntokozo Sithole crowned the winner.
The models were drawn from the UZ, MSU, Women’s University, Bindura, Gwanda, Nust Masvingo and Chinhoyi universities.
