ZIMBABWE – Mberengwa – Zimbabwe’s First Lady Grace Mugabe made some controversial remarks about rape when she spoke at a Zanu PF rally in Mberengwa on Friday.

According to NewsDay, Mugabe said, “If you walk around wearing mini skirts displaying your thighs and inviting men to drool over you, then you want to complain when you have been raped? It’s unfortunate because it will be your fault.

“Wear clothes like Mai Mugabe or you can choose a trousers, but not those which are too tight. These types of clothes are the signs of moral decadence in our country.”

The comments drew the ire of women’s rights activists and the general public.

An attorney from the Women’s Legal Centre, Sanja Bornman, said, “To blame a woman’s outfit or what she’s wearing is blaming the victim and that props up rape culture.”
