ZIMBABWE – South Africa is due to deport 140 ex-convicts via road back to Zimbabwe this weekend under police escort.
Reports from Zimbabwe say the deportees have just finished serving sentences of up to 18 years in jail.
Those being send home have served time for crimes including murder, armed robbery and theft.
Zimbabwe’s Consul-General to South Africa, Batiraishe Mukonoweshuro, said they’ve separated these deportees from ordinary legal immigrants.
He told the state-run Chronicle newspaper that officials have tried to make sure that none of these 140 ex-convicts will be able to escape before reaching the border.
That’s a referring to an incident in December when dozens of illegal immigrants, on their way back to Zimbabwe, managed to jump off moving buses.
Another 950 illegal immigrants, this time without criminal records, are due to be send home, most of them next week.
