ZIMBABWE – A Glen Norah man, who left his wife nursing bite wounds on the nose for securing her cellphone with a password, will spend 15 months in prison.
Gift Nyawera was initially sentenced to 20 months in prison before five were suspended on condition of good behaviour and he will effectively serve the remaining 15.
This was after Nyawera had appeared before Mbare magistrate Shelly Zvenyika charged with physical abuse.
He had denied the allegations saying that he bit his wife Brenda Chimonyo in self-defense after she charged towards him.
“Your worship l only retaliated after she charged at me demanding her phone, it still puzzles me why my wife would put a password on her cellphone to stop me from using it, what is she hiding from me.
“l was just trying to protect our marriages from the evil vices of social networks yet her refusal to let me access her phone is evidence enough that she is cheating and when l ask about it l find myself in the dock,” he said.
However, prosecutor Vincent Chikerema proved that Nyawera assaulted and bit his wife on the nose when she refused to let him access her cellphone.
On January 31 the couple was at their home in Glen Norah when Nyawera asked for Chimonyo’s cellphone.
Chimonyo gave him and he requested for the password since it was locked.
Chimonyo refused to tell Nyawera her password.
A heated argument ensued and Nyawera accused Chimonyo of cheating on him.
In ire he punched Chimonyo on the face and later bit her on the nose.
Chimonyo was treated at Harare Hospital.
The medical report which was admitted in court as evidence states that she sustained severe injuries caused by a sharp object which resulted in the amputation of the left nostril.
It further stated that the injury is likely to be permanent.
