HARARE – MDC Alliance President Nelson Chamisa on Thursday visited the recently demolished houses in Budiriro where he met the many families who have been left homeless as a result.
“It’s painful to see your house that you built being destroyed without any explanation. As a leader I’m hurt by this and I call upon all those who say they are leaders to be hurt and show compassion for these people,” said Chamisa.

Adding that they were going to take up the case further and enquire from all those involved including the police and council to ensure the victims get proper places to stay.

Commenting during the same visit, Mayor Jacob Mafume said they were going to push for an immediate humanitarian response through talking to social welfare authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that the victims are provided with accommodation and food supplies.

More than 130 families have been weathering the wet season for the past two days as many were left hopeless with no food and lost their property.
One of the victims said those tho carried out the demolitions were accompanied by the police who had firearms, tear gas and police dogs.

“We cannot say it’s Council because they didn’t come alone but with riot police which makes us think it’s political as they were leaving other houses,” narrated another.

Residents from the areas appealed to the authorities to provide an avenue to regularise their stands.
