HARARE – Police have urged the public to surrender to the nearest police station anyone caught committing crimes instead of taking the law into their own hands.
This comes after an increase of cases of mob justice across the country with the latest being a Seke man who was fatally struck with iron bars after he was caught stealing maize.
“The ZRP is warning members of the public against meting out instant justice and report all criminal cases at any nearest Police Station. This follows an incident in Chitungwiza on 15/03/21 at about 2100 hrs where a suspected maize thief was fatally assaulted.
“The victim was caught stealing maize cobs from a field on at Savanhu Village, Seke and suspects struck him with iron bars several times and poured water on him. The victim was severely injured and sent to hospital where he died on admission,” read a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
