HARARE – MDC-T national chairman Morgan Komichi has claimed that everything that belonged to the late founding leader of the party, Morgan Tsvangirai belongs to them including supporters.
In a speech during Sunday’s memorial service for the late former Prime Minister, Komichi claimed everyone who worked under Tsvangirai belonged to him (Tsvangirai) hence now they all belonged to them (MDC-T).
“Vanhu vese vangavachishanda pasi paTsvangirai vanhu vaTsvangirai vese, akuna munhu waNelson[everyone who worked under Tsvangirai belonged to Tsvangirai, none of them belongs to Nelson(a reference to MDC Alliance and most popular opposition leader Nelson Chamisa. The fact that we are the ones who remained at Harvest House, as MDC-T, everything that belonged to Tsvangirai is ours.
“Madzimai ake ndeedu, vana vake ndevedu, vanukuna vake vese ndevedu, party yose ndeyedu, maMPs ndeedu, maCouncillors ndedu, MDC Alliance ndeyedu, tisu takagara nhaka yaTsvangirai [his wives are ours, children are ours, his siblings are ours, the party is ours, the MPs are ours, Councillors are ours, even MDC Alliance is ours. We are the ones who inherited what belonged to Tsvangirai],” said Komichi.
He also claimed that Tsvangirai won the 2008 presidential election with 74% but still accepted a junior post of Prime Minister during the Government of National Unity (GNU) because he wanted to serve the Zimbabwean people.
Komichi is part of the members who defected from the MDC Alliance to go and rejoin the MDC-T following a rampant purge of MDC Alliance legislators by former MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe.
Thokozani Khupe was subsequently defeated at an extraordinary congress held to elect Tsvangirai’s successor in December last year.
Komichi also contested in the congress and managed to get an embarrassing 9 votes only, however, was subsequently reappointed the national chairman by the party’s new leader Douglas Mwonozra.
The Congress was highly disputed and marred with violence and voter fraud.
