HARARE – The city of Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume was on Monday arrested for allegedly trying to bribe the chief witness in the case where he is accused of abuse of public office.
Mafume denies these allegations.
Reports are that he was picked up by the police on Monday at Rottenrow Magistrates Court where he had gone for his routine remand for the case in which he is accused of pushing City Council employees to illegally allocate residential stands to his sister and PA in Westlea.
His party, MDC Alliance has said his arrest is part of the continued political persecution of opposition members by the State.
“We condemn the continued persecution of Mayor J Mafume. This is a clear attempt by the system to hamstring his work at Council and entrench central Government interference in the running of cohsunshinecity. He is being punished for being a member of the MDC Alliance,” said the party.
