HARARE – The Mayor of the City of Harare, Jacob Mafume was today granted ZWL$30 00 bail by the High Court.
Mafume who is facing charges of criminal abuse of office was arrested on Thursday 26 November and was subsequently denied bail with the ruling judge arguing there was a possibility that the Harare Mayor could use his influence to interfere with witnesses and evidence.
The allegations are linked to allocation of residential stands where it alleged that he pushed for the allocation of residential stands to his sister Rotina Mafume and another for the secretary at his firm.

Commenting on the ruling, the MDC Alliance said: “Mayor Mafume has been granted bail on appeal by the High Court. We reiterate that his detention and the refusal of bail in the first place were unconstitutional and a clear act of persecution. This weaponization of the law against MDC Alliance members must end.”
As part of the bail conditions set, Mafume is ordered to reside at his given address, surrender his passport and not interfere with witnesses.
