HARARE – Jailed Harare West Member of parliament Joana Mamombe fell seriously ill in custody and has been rushed to a local hospital, the party has said.
In a tweet, the party’s spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said formalities had been completed for the youthful legislator had to be taken to a hospital.
“Please say a prayer for @JoanaMamombe. The prison formalities have been completed. She’s now en route to a hospital in Harare via ambulance. She’s suffering from acute stomach pain. We wish her a speedy recovery. She has gone through so much,” Mahere tweeted.
Earlier on, party Secretary-General, Chalton Hwende said a doctor had been called in to attend to her after a nurse had examined her condition.
“I have just been to Chikurubi Maximum Prison visiting incarcerated MDC Alliance female cadres Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Vongai Tome. Joana Mamombe is seriously ill and has just been seen by a prison nurse who has since called in a doctor. Solidarity is our culture,” said Hwende.
Mamombe was recently denied bail with fellow youth leader Cecilia Chimbiri following their arrest for breaching Covid-19 regulations after they called for a presser denouncing the arrest of Makomborero Haruzivishe.
The judges ruled that the two had the propensity to commit offences since they had other pending cases already.
However, the MDC Alliance says this is part of persecution by the state to silence dissenting voices.
