HARARE – Harare West legislator Joana Mamombe and fellow MDC Alliance member Cecilia Chmbili will spend another night at Chikurubi Maximum Prison after magistrate Mambanje postponed his ruling on their bail application.
Magistrate Mambanje said he will hand down the ruling on Thursday at 9 am because he had another case to attend to today.
The State represented by Prosecutor Audrey Chogumaira opposed the duo’s bail application on grounds that they [Mamombe and Chimbiri] are committing offences while they are out on bail facing different charges hence she argues that the two are “undermining the court system.”
Mamombe and Chimbiri were arrested on Monday while participating in a flash demonstration demanding the release of political prisoners.
Their lawyer, Charles Kwaramba the duo are being targeted as part of the broader persecution of opposition members.
The two are already facing allegations of faking their abduction, the charges the State raised against them after they were reportedly abducted and tortured by suspected state agents.
