MANICALAND – Residents of Makoni West gathered at Chinyamandana Secondary School to express their concerns over the delayed disbursement of Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) funds.

The meeting that was held last week, was organized by Heal Zimbabwe Trust and the Community Peace Club Kugara Kunzwana. The villagers highlighted the discrimination and disenfranchisement of beneficiaries in rural schools due to the government’s failure to fulfil its obligations on time.

Community members emphasised that the late disbursement of funds has resulted in inadequate resources, forcing children to learn while sitting on the floor due to a lack of school furniture and stationery.

Local school teachers and members of the School Development Committee (SDC) echoed these concerns, stressing that the inefficiencies in the disbursement process have directly impacted the quality of education received by beneficiaries.

Rosemary Kampira, Chairperson of the Kugara Kunzwana Peace Club, condemned the discrimination faced by students and emphasised the need for a more inclusive selection process to ensure equal access to educational assistance.

The community unanimously called on the government to disburse BEAM funds promptly and ensure that no teacher or school violates the rights of young children seeking an education.

The meeting also addressed pressing issues such as food insecurity, urging the government to intervene and ensure impartial distribution of food aid. The Community Peace Club tasked local leaders with engaging schools to end discrimination against BEAM students and pledged to monitor aid distribution to promote fairness and accountability.

The Makoni community’s plea for timely disbursement of BEAM funds reflects their commitment to protecting the right to education for all children, and it is hoped that the government will take immediate action to address these concerns and ensure equitable distribution of educational resources.
