HARARE – MDC Alliance duo of Harare West Member of Parliament Joana Mamombe and fellow party youth leader Cecilia Chimbiri were yesterday denied bail again following their latest bid for freedom.
The duo, accused of breaching Covid-19 regulations after they called for a press conference denouncing the arrest of recently convicted pro-democracy activist Makomborero Haruzivishe made a fresh attempt for bail at the magistrate’s court citing changed circumstances.
Alec Muchadehama, in his arguments, had also cited the release of co-accused student leader Takudzwa Ngadziore who was granted bail while the two were denied.
However, Harare magistrate Denis Mangosi rejected the application on the basis that there were no changed circumstances to warrant the release of the two opposition members.
Mamombe and Chimbiri were a few weeks ago denied bail by High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi who ruled that the two had the propensity to commit offences since they committed the offence while out on bail on other separate cases.
The MDC Alliance has condemned the arrest and continued detention of the duo, saying they were being persecuted for speaking truth to power.
The two have their trial date set for the 5th of May.
