Man arrested for extoring money from omnibus operator

ZIMBABWE – A man believed to be a police officer stationed at Harare ZRP Golf Club was taken to court facing allegations of attempting to extort money from a commuter omnibus operator he had arrested for picking passengers at an undesignated area.

Brighton Manduvi appeared at the Harare magistrates’ court charged with criminal abuse of duty as a public officer.

The State led by Peter Kachirika had it that on February 1 Brighton and his three alleged accomplices arrested a kombi at the corner of Robert Mugabe and Rezende Street.

It is said that they ordered the driver to drive to City of Harare Central Stores along Coventry road.

Upon arrival at the Central Stores, the trio is said to have advised the driver of the kombi to pay US$60 at the gate saying the car had been impounded.

After sometime, the complainant saw Manduvi returning with another kombi and advised him that he had managed to raise US$50 from the US$60 that they wanted.

It is said that one Inspector Chitsiko emerged during the time Manduvi was being handed the money before being apprehended.

Reports are that the trio was taken to Harare Central police station.

The court heard that Manduvi and his said accomplices took to the heels in a bid to evade arrest.

Manduvi was apprehended but the other two managed to escape.
