HARARE – Opposition MDC Alliance leadership today paid a solidarity visit to the family of incarcerated activist Makomborero Haruzivishe who was recently sentenced to 14 months in prison.
Last week, Harare magistrate Judith Taruvinga delivered the sentence to Haruzivishe after finding him guilty of inciting public violence and resisting police arrest.
The MDC Alliance say the party President Nelson Chamisa dispatched the delegation led by party Secretary-General Chalton Hwende who briefed the family on the legal and welfare plans for Haruzivishe.
“The team spent the day with Mako’s family and took time to brief them on the party’s legal and welfare plan for Mako. The delegation also joined the family in the fields. Mako’s family were in good spirits and remain strong in the face of the unjust persecution of their son whom they testified to be a peace-loving and selfless young man,” the party said in a statement.

The statement further said Haruzivishe’s mother told the delegation that his son (Makomborero) had said he will continue to speak truth to power despite the risk of arrests and that they should remain strong if he gets arrested.

MDC Alliance has condemned the arrest as political persecution of its members and party of the efforts to silence dissenting voices.
The party says currently 12 members are in prison being held as political prisoners.
