Nigeria – Leading humanitarian organisation for children, Save The Children has appealed for the safe release of more than 300 schoolgirls abducted in Nigeria’s Zamfara state.
Reports say hundreds of girls were abducted from a boarding school by gunmen in the early hours of Friday.
“Save the Children is horrified by reports that up to 450 schoolgirls have been abducted from a school in Nigeria’s Zamfara state. The aid organisation is appealing for their immediate release and for any perpetrators to be held to account,” read the statement from the organisation.
Over the years, cases of abducted children in Nigeria have been on the rise, with the Chibok schoolgirls in 2014 attracting global attention.
Save the Children country director(Nigeria) Mercy Gichuhi said the safety of these recently kidnapped girls was the primary concern.
“We are deeply concerned about the abduction of these girls from the Government Girls Secondary School by suspected armed groups this morning. Their safety and well-being remain our primary concern, and our hearts go out to them and their families,” she said.
