ZIMBABWE – President Mugabe, his wife Grace and a large number of hangers on have left Harare for New York.
Mugabe is attending the 70th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly which began its current sitting on the 15th of this month.
New York is a plum destination for hangers on who will be desperate to be on the travelling party. Grace never misses a trip to America, moreso now that her husband is a frail old man.
The 70th session of the General Assembly is being chaired by Mr Mogens Lyketoft, a Danish national and former speaker of parliament and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Finance.
The session is being held under the theme: ‘The UN at 70 – Road to Security, Peace and Human Rights.’
The session will see other heads of state and government from different parts of the world converging in New York for the high level meeting on the adoption of the post 2015 development agenda and the general debate where the heads of state are given an opportunity to address the general assembly.
The high level segment of the session’s theme will focus on the post 2015 development agenda titled ‘Transforming Our World – The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.’
It is the outcome document of the inter-governmental negotiation process which started in January 2015 and ended last month.
