BULAWAYO – Police have confirmed that a one-month-old baby was found under a tree near Fairbridge along Bulawayo-Harare road.
This was confirmed by Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi.
“Investigations are on going to identify and locate the mother.
Nyathi also added that the baby was taken to Mpilo hospital for further management.
The baby was found on Wednesday around 4pm by passers-by.
Professor Solwayo Ngwenya, the acting CEO at Mpilo Central Hospital said the baby had been exposed to cold weather because of the rains that happened on Tuesday.
“Our people are caring for the child. She was exposed to the cold and so there are issues of hypothermia there.”
Adding that the baby “should pull through.”
The hospital chief also said they received an average of 10 babies dumped every year.
“It’s a very sad issue. It’s terrible to think a mother can dump their child, leave them to the elements at their most vulnerable. It’s very hard and inhumane.”
“We are hoping the mother will turn up and hopefully she gets the help she needs, said Ngwenya.
Ngwenya said they were liaising with social services as they are the ones responsible for abandoned babies.
