FRANCISTOWN, Botswana – Zimbabwe last night beat Botswana to secure a third successive AFCON qualification after Zambia failed to get the much-needed win in another group H encounter.
A debut goal by Perfect Chikwende fourteen minutes into the game managed to secure the three points for the Warriors and another AFCON qualification.
Having taken the early lead, through Chikwende after some unconvincing goalkeeping from Kabelo Dambe, the Warriors had a huge task ahead as Botswana pushed on.
Needing a win to keep their hopes of qualifying, Botswana dominated the rest of the game but the defensive discipline by the Warriors ensured they sailed through the game with that solitary goal.
However, the Warriors had to wait for the late kick-off between Algeria and Zambia with Zambia needing nothing but a win to keep their hopes of qualification alive.
With the Algerians seemingly cruising past Zambia, the Warriors’ qualification seemed secured.
Zambia pushed on for the win but ultimately fell short managing only a draw on the night.
The Warriors have now qualified for the biggest continental competition for the fifth time.
