CHINHOYI – A biker on clearance duties for First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s convoy was involved in a fatal accident.
The accident which claimed the life of Sergeant Freddy Chipato occurred along the Harare – Chinhoyi road, according to a statement issued by police spokesperson Paul Nyathi.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports that 2nd of April 2021 at 1630 hours, a fatal Road Traffic Accident involving Sergeant Freddy Chipato of ZRP Chinhoyi Traffic occurred at the 131km peg along Harare-Chinhoyi road near Lion’s Den.
“The member was on VIP traffic clearance duties riding a police motorbike while the First Lady’s convoy was on it’s way from Mhangura,” Nyathi said.
Nyathi said Sergeant Chipato’s bike collided with a vehicle being driven by another police officer stationed at Harare Station after the latter failed to pull off the road and swerved to the right.
“Suddenly, a motorist, Tinotenda Esau Mutandiro, who was later identified to be a police officer stationed in Harare came driving his Toyota Altezza on his way to Karoi with one passenger on board. He tried to pull off the road to the left in a bid to give way to the clearing party but failed and swerved to the right.
“The Toyota Altezza then encroached on the lane of the motor bill which was proceeding in the opposite direction. The vehicle then collided with the clearing motorbike resulting in the death of Seargent Chipato after sustaining serious bodily injuries,” added Nyathi.
Nyathi insisted that the accident had nothing to do with the First Lady’s convoy.
