ZMBABWE – A police officer stationed at CID Southerton Property section was arrested on accusations of conning another man of his cash in a botched car deal.
Lovemore Marwisa appeared at the Harare magistrates’ court charged with fraud.
Marwisa, who is being represented by Auxilia Mangwaira of Bothwell Ndlovu Attorneys at Law, was not asked to plead to the charges when he appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe.
He was remanded out of custody on US$50 bail.
Circumstances leading to Marwisa’s arrest are that on February 6 Bire White was approached by his workmate Hillary Mugwagwa who told him that there was a car which was being sold.
White later went to meet Marwisa who was in the company of Tachaona Chirume at Whitehouse along Bulawayo road.
It is said that they went to Chirume’s house where White was shown a BMW which was being sold for US$2 500.
The court heard that Marwisa and Chirume told White that he was supposed to pay US$800 and pay the remaining balance within three months.
Reports are that they drove to High Glen Shopping Centre where White handed Chirume and Marwisa US$700.
White was told to visit Chirume at his house to collect the BMW the following day, according to the State.
It is said White attempted to collect the car from the Chirume but failed on several occasions.
He was then called by Marwisa on January 11 this year and was told to meet him at Whitehouse.
Upon meeting Marwisa and Chirume, White was told that the BMW had been involved in an accident and it was damaged beyond repair.
They reportedly offered him a Mercedes Benz and asked him to top-up US$1 300.
White reportedly turned down the offer.
It was when he noted that he was duped before taking the matter to the police.
White allegedly lost US$1 275.
Rumbidzai Kanyaruta was also allegedly duped of US$4 500 after she gave the Chirume and Marwisa her BMW for repairs.
