The much anticipated return of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer league received a blow earlier this week after the postponement to 22 May 2021, but it may have come as a blessing in disguise for many local football lovers. The Premier Soccer League yesterday unveiled a sponsorship of US$1,130,000,00 from Delta Beverages per season for the next three years across three competitions.
The big cheque will be split thereby giving a share of US$700,000,00 (Castle Lager PSL), US$375,000,00 (Chibuku Super Cup) and US$55,000,00 (Castle Challenge Cup). According to a press release by Delta Beverages, the money is payable in Zimbabwean Dollars, “payable in ZW$ at the bank rate of the day”, a move that will ensure security to all clubs and the Castle PSL.
The PSL will now trial run a new football calendar from August 2021-May 2022 thereby synchronising with the majority of leagues across the globe. With the return of the League and cups looming, PSL has its fingers crossed as they push for free ground rentals already having seen Mandava Stadium administration agree while Bulawayo clubs will get 5 games at Barbourfields Stadium for free hoping for likely news for National Sports Stadium and Sakubva. As fans get ready to sing jingles , speking at the inveilling yesterday , PSL Chairman Mr Jere vowed that football will be next to none this season, “2021 is going to be a different year, it’s going to be exciting, we have a very good product”.
The big money sponsorship in addition to the broadcasting agreement with Zimbabwe Television Network (ZTN) have been the icing on the cake and the cherry is soon to be added.
