HARARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa is increasingly getting under pressure to wield the axe on one of his vice presidents, Kembo Mohadi who is embroiled in damaging sexual scandals.
This follows a week filled with multiple sex scandals leaked where the VP is allegedly involved with various women including a married subordinate and another beneficiary of his scholarship programme.
In the multiple leaked audios purported to be Mohadi’s conversations with multiple women, he is heard organising various sexual adventures including having office sex.
Human rights activists and opposition parties have called for his resignation, arguing his behaviour is not consistent with someone holding such a high public office.
“The office of the Vice President demands highest levels of integrity and moral probity. If the allegations of abuse of office, power, sexual harassment and misconduct against VP Kembo Mohadi are true, then he must do the honourable thing and STEP DOWN!, said Women’s Academy for Leadership in a statement.
The MDC Alliance said his (Mohadi) fitness for office has to be questioned amid these allegations.
“We demand accountability for this conduct unbecoming of a person ‘holding high office.’ The allegations raised here are serious especially given the abuse of state offices, state resources and improper use of state time. The fitness and propriety of Mohadi is called into question,” the opposition party said.
On Monday, the Human Rights NGO Forum and the Women and Law in Southern Africa issued a joint statement saying they were troubled by these allegations.
“The Forum and WLSA are deeply troubled by the allegations as they involve engagements of a sexual nature by persons in positions of power with subordinate personnel,” said the joint statement from the two civil society groups.
The leaked audios further sparked controversy when the government spokesperson Nick Mangwana tried to defend the beleaguered VP.
