HARARE – Henrietta Rushwaya’s emerging links to top senior government officials, including her alleged romantic relationship with the Prosecutor General, Kumbirai Hodzi has raised serious concerns about the implications on her trial.
Rushwaya who was arrested yesterday after she was caught trying to smuggle over 6kgs of gold to Dubai without the relevant export documents is set to appear at the Magistrate’s Court today.
However, there has been growing concern about how independent the courts will be in dealing with her case.
Apart from being allegedly in a love affair with the Prosecutor General who is basically the chief of the National Prosecuting Authority meant to prosecute her, Rushwaya is also cousins with Martin Rushwaya(their fathers are brothers), who is the Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration and Finance in the Office of the President and Cabinet.
Martin Rushwaya is also former Defence Ministry Permanent Secretary.
It is further claimed that Martin Rushwaya’s mother is sister to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s mother.
Henrietta Rushwaya is no stranger to being caught up in corruption scandal, she was heavily Implicated in the Asiagate scandal which she managed to survive.
On top of that, she later became President of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) despite her background which is marred by corruption scandals.
It remains to be seen whether she will survive the latest arrest and questions are being raised because of the history of prosecution of politically connected individuals in the country.
Most of them are arrested, given bail and their cases not pursued further.
