HARARE – Incarcerated MDC Alliance vice-chairman Job Sikhala will remain detained at Chikurubi Maximum Prison after Justice Davison Foroma postponed his bail appeal hearing to 26 January 2021.
Prosecutors say they received the case records today and have not had enough time to study it so that they can file their response.
The Zengeza West legislator has been in custody since 13 January 2021 when he was arrested and charged with “communicating falsehoods” after he commented on a widely circulated video which alleged that a police officer had fatally struck a baby with a baton stick.
Fellow MDC Alliance official, Fadzayi Mahere who is facing the same charges was earlier this week granted bail.
Yesterday, Foroma also reserved Chin’ono’s bail appeal judgement on similar charges.
The trio’s arrest has sparked widespread criticism on the weaponisation of the law against government critics in the country as legal experts say the law being used to charge the trio was nullified in 2014 by the highest court in the country.
