TEHRAN, IRAN –  In a devastating turn of events, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were killed in a helicopter crash yesterday evening, May 19, 2024.

The tragic incident occurred while the president and his delegation were returning from a trip to neighboring Azerbaijan, where they had attended the inauguration of a dam.

According to reports, the Bell 212 helicopter carrying the president, foreign minister, and seven others crashed in a mountainous area of East Azerbaijan Province due to poor weather conditions, including heavy fog and rain. Rescue teams faced significant challenges in reaching the crash site, but unfortunately, all nine individuals on board were confirmed dead.

While many Iranians are mourning the loss of their leaders, other sections of the population are seemingly celebrating the news. Social media platforms are filled with mixed reactions, with some users expressing condolences and others posting messages of joy and relief. Some opposition groups have also issued statements welcoming the news, citing the president’s controversial policies and human rights record.

The government has announced a national day of mourning, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway. Meanwhile, Israel has issued a statement denying any involvement in the incident, following speculation on social media.
