ZIMBABWE – A city woman has been arrested and brought before the court facing charges of providing false information to the Registrar General’s Office.
Sarudzai Motsi, 49, of no fixed aboard appeared before Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe facing charges of contravening subsection (2) of section 27 of the Birth and Deaths Registration Act Chapter 5.02.
The matter was remanded to March 7 on US$50 bail.
Allegations facing Sarudzai are that on June 5 2013, she connived with Miriro Nyengeterai Nyamundanda Chirenda to go at Market Square where they registered a death certificate for the late Ngoni Johanne Motsi.
The court heard that Sarudzai knowingly approached the Registrar General’s office purporting to be a close relative of the late Ngoni.
Sarudzai tendered an affidavit confirming that she was a close relative of the deceased.
The two took advantage of the similarity of the surnames between Sarudzai and the deceased Ngoni though they were not related.
The court also heard that this resulted in the issuance of certificate of death No 1421705AA to Miriro.
After obtaining the certificate Miriro on June 28 the same year proceeded to Market Square where she used the certificate to fraudulently register the two birth certificates of her children Ngoni Takudzwa and Susan Motsi.
Sarudzai also witnessed again as the close relative to facilitate the issuance of these birth certificates.
