ZIMBABWE – A teenage girl was arrested at Mverechena Business Centre in Domboshava after she was found drinking beer whilst wearing an army uniform belonging to her boyfriend.
Pamela Siliya, of No.4207 Waterfalls Harare, was apprehended by another soldier who took her to KG 6 to her arrest after it was discovered that she was not in the army.
The 19-year-old admitted to stealing the army uniform when she appeared before magistrate Nomsa Sabarauta.
Pamela told the court that she wanted to travel to watch a game but she had no bus fare.
It was when she thought of wearing her boyfriend’s army uniform to enjoy the privilege of travelling for free to where she wanted to watch the game.
“I am not a soldier. I wanted to go and watch a game but I had no bus fare.
“It was when I decided to put on the uniform to enjoy the privilege of travelling for free.
“I was not aware that it was an offence,” she said.
Magistrate Sabarauta then convicted the teenager on her own plea.
In her mitigation, Pamela, told the court that she survives on playing snooker.
“Ndobheja snooker.
“I realise US$20 per week,” she said.
Public Prosecutor Yeukai Dzuda had it that on December 3 at around Pamela was drinking beer at Mverechena Business Centre.
She was spotting the army regalia.
Her actions caught the attention of another soldier who apprehended and took her to Sergeant Ephraim Sibanda at KG6.
It was at King George 6 where she confessed that she was not a soldier.
Pamela was then taken to police before she was hauled to court.
She will know her fate today when magistrate Sabarauta sentences her.
