VICTORIA FALLS – The Zimbabwean government has announced plans to construct a world-class cricket stadium in Victoria Falls, ahead of the 2026 and 2027 Cricket World Cup, which the country will jointly host with South Africa and Namibia.

According to the acting Minister of Sports, Arts and Recreation, Hon Dr. Jenfan Muswere, and the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon Babra Rwodzi, the stadium will be built on 10 hectares of land in the Muswere special Economic Zone for tourism.

The project is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s tourism industry, which is a key pillar of the economy, accounting for 12% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon Babra Rwodzi, said the project will help achieve the target of US$5 billion for the tourism industry by 2025.

“The project will contribute towards the us$5 billion Tourism and Hospitality Industry by 2025, as well as the development and expansion of sports infrastructure in the country,” Hon Rwodzi has said.

The construction of the cricket facilities and associated infrastructure will also create training and employment opportunities for communities in Victoria Falls, she added.

The project will promote sustainable tourism in line with the United Nations Tourism ethos, and the diverse tourism business facilities in the resort town will blend with the natural environment.

The development is a significant milestone for Zimbabwe’s cricket fraternity and is expected to boost the country’s chances of hosting international cricket tournaments in the future.
