HARARE – Weeks after its highly publicized launch on April 30, the Zimbabwe Gold, the country’s new gold-backed currency, remains elusive to many citizens. Despite the initial excitement, the scarcity of the new currency has sparked frustration and concern among the public.

Since its announcement by Governor John Mushayavanhu on April 5, anticipation has been building, but the limited availability has left many without the opportunity to even hold the new currency. This has added to the intrigue surrounding its introduction.

The public’s enthusiasm and curiosity about the new currency reflect a deep-seated desire for economic stability and positive change. However, reactions from citizens reveal a sense of exclusion and frustration. Anorld Maenzanise expressed disappointment, saying, “It’s sad that people were not part of the decision-making process, and now they’re struggling to access the new currency.”

Tawanda Kakasa simply stated, “We only hear about it.” The lack of access to the new currency has sparked anger, as change has become difficult to come by. Investigations revealed that many have been asked to pay more for transportation and goods, causing hardship for families.

Citizens like David Mudyandigere urged policymakers to consider the impact on families and children. “Policy makers should know people have children who go to school and families to feed,” he said. Others questioned the introduction of a currency that seems inaccessible to the general public.

The continued uncertainty around the economy and the unavailability of the Zimbabwe Gold on the market threaten to push more families into poverty. The government is urged to address these concerns and ensure the new currency is user-friendly and accessible to all.
