HARARE – The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has urged the State to take concrete measures designed to reveal the truth on human rights violations that have happened in the country.
In a statement commemorating the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of the Victims, ZLHR said it was also important for State actors to take steps towards the restoration of the dignity of victims.
“On the Day for the Right to Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of the Victims, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights(ZLHR)calls upon the state concrete measures designed to reveal the truth concerning gross human rights violations that have occurred in Zimbabwe.
“ZLHR also urges state actors to take steps to restore the dignity of the victims of gross human rights violations by initiating necessary processes to provide reparations to the victims, survivors and their relatives,” read the statement.
The human rights organisation said despite the setting up of the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) as mandated by the Constitution, they were concerned that victims and survivors still do not know what happened to them, their relatives and friends.
ZLHR cited the Gukurahundi massacres as one of the cases in which it was worrying that the state has not yet conducted thorough investigations.
