HARARE – Harare City Council Mayor, Jacob Mafume has been further remanded in custody until 30 November 2020 when he is expected to know the outcome of his bail application.
The ruling on his application could not be handed down today after Magistrate Bianca Makwande failed to turn up for the court session.
Mafume was arrested on Thursday and is facing charges of criminal abuse of office, allegations linked to allocation of residential stands.
It is alleged that Mafume used his position to influence Harare City Council’s Director of Housing, Admmore Nhekairo to allocate stands to his sister Rotina Mafume and her friend by the name of Rutendo Muvhuti.
On Friday, investigation officer, Superintendent Joseph Sarihwindi submitted that Mafume should not be granted bail because he was likely going to interfere with witnesses and evidence.
He also said Mafume was facing an offence with a lengthy sentence if found guilty hence there was a risk that he could flee.
However, the MDC Alliance blasted the arrest labeling it an attempt by the government “to get rid of all MDC Alliance mayors.”
