PARIS – Former France President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to three years in prison after he was found guilty of trying to bribe a judge in exchange for information.
Two years were suspended meaning he could effectively serve a one-year jail sentence if his appeal fails.
He was accused of influence-peddling and violation of professional secrecy.
Sarkozy becomes the first former French President to get a custodial sentence.
His legal team are said to be preparing to launch an appeal and if unsuccessful, the former French President could serve the year at home under certain conditions rather than go to prison.
