HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police say they have arrested in connection with the illegal New Year’s Eve music festive hosted in Mbare where thousands gathered to celebrate the new year.
Prominent music promoter, Dj Fantan who is believed to have been one of the organisers of the potential Covid-19 super spreader is reportedly on the run following the arrests
The arrests were made after a public outcry as video footage and images of thousands of people attending the concert went viral on social media.
Police say they have arrested over two thousand people across the country for violating Covid-19 lockdown measures during on the 1st of Januray.
“Police have arrested 2321 people for violating COVID -19 lockdown measures throughout the country on 1st January 2021. It appears members of the public are taking the COVID-19 pandemic for granted and are no longer taking precautionary measures.
“We are also aware of the incident of an alleged unsanctioned gathering in Mbare on New Year’s Eve and investigations have been instituted.
“So far 52 people have been arrested and we are looking for DJ Fantan, who operates a recording studio at Block 14 Matapi Flats and David House Entertainment operators for openly defying the Government’s COVID-19 measures on health, safety and security,” police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
